  • Short Bio / Excerpt:

Melody De Leon is an inspiring hospitality leader and community advocate who serves as the Senior Manager and Cafe Manager of Museum Cafe 8 in Hong Kong. Operating as a flagship social enterprise under The Nesbitt Centre, the cafe—located atop the Hong Kong Maritime Museum at Central Pier 8—is celebrated for providing vocational training and employment opportunities to adults with special educational needs and learning disabilities. Under De Leon's guidance, the enterprise has become a prominent model for inclusive employment, blending high-quality hospitality with a deep mission of social impact.

De Leon’s journey in Hong Kong began over two decades ago. She originally arrived in the city as a migrant worker, navigating the challenges of relocation while building her foundations in the local service industry. Her perseverance and natural aptitude for operations eventually led her into management roles within Hong Kong's competitive food and beverage sector, including early experience working as a supervisor at Laterrasse Wine Bar and Restaurant.

A defining turn in her career occurred when she joined The Nesbitt Centre to manage Cafe 8, despite initially having no formal background or prior experience in working with neurodivergent individuals. Stepping into the role of Acting Manager, she quickly adapted to the unique needs of her team, learning to balance rigorous commercial restaurant standards with immense empathy and patience. Her leadership proved transformative, helping to orchestrate a supportive environment that elevated the social enterprise into a landmark community destination.

At Museum Cafe 8, De Leon oversees a diverse team where roughly 60 percent of the staff live with learning disabilities. Rather than using fixed or restrictive roles, she implements an empowering rotational system that allows employees to learn at their own pace—advancing from clearing tables to mastering complex tasks like prepping sandwiches and pulling espresso shots. She has frequently highlighted that for her team, arriving early to wait outside before the doors open proves that the cafe provides far more than a paycheck; it gives them real dignity, systemic life skills, and a voice in society.

Today, De Leon is a respected figure across regional social impact networks, frequently collaborating with international charity leaders and changemaker programs visiting Hong Kong. Her work directly addresses the severe employment gaps faced by the city's neurodivergent population, actively converting a scenic waterfront rooftop venue into a platform where individuals with diverse abilities can thrive independently. By demonstrating that a socially conscious business can achieve strict quality control alongside humanitarian metrics, she continues to inspire a more empathetic approach to commercial F&B operations throughout East Asia.
